Sarah M. asks: "My 20-year-old maple tree has been dropping leaves early this summer. The leaves are turning yellow and brown. Should I be concerned?"
Aaron Braithwaite responds:
Early leaf drop in maples can indicate several issues. Based on your description, it could be drought stress, root damage, or a fungal infection. I'd recommend checking soil moisture 6 inches deep and looking for any construction activity near the tree in the past year. Send me photos of the affected leaves and I can provide a more specific diagnosis.
Mike R. asks: "I have a large oak tree that's about 15 feet from my house. A branch fell during the last storm. Is the whole tree dangerous?"
Aaron Braithwaite responds:
One fallen branch doesn't necessarily mean the entire tree is compromised, but it's definitely worth a professional assessment. Look for signs like multiple dead branches, fungal growth at the base, or cracks in the trunk. Given its proximity to your house, I'd recommend scheduling an in-person evaluation. This could qualify for our tree clearance service if removal is needed.
Jennifer L. asks: "When is the best time to prune fruit trees in Ontario? I have apple and cherry trees."
Aaron Braithwaite responds:
Great question! For Ontario's climate, late winter (February-March) is ideal for fruit tree pruning while they're still dormant. Apple trees can handle more aggressive pruning, while cherry trees should be pruned more conservatively. Avoid pruning in fall as it can stimulate new growth that won't harden off before winter. I offer specialized fruit tree pruning services if you'd like professional help.
